During this time of unprecedented political, environmental, and economic collapse, it is easy to get lost in hopelessness, fear, and despair. But what if we could shift the narratives of our time? What if we could dance away from stories of doom and gloom, and into stories of purpose and meaning? What if we could create a truly life-sustaining future, together? Let’s come together to metaphorically dance between the stories of our time.
The Work That Reconnects is an interactive, embodied experience done in community. It "reconnects" us with ourselves, each other, our communities, the Earth, and the wider web of life. Created by Joanna Macy, the late climate activist and author of Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We’re in with Unexpected Resilience and Creative Power, this workshop is perfect for anyone who wants to shift out of fear and into purpose, and who wants to help make our world a better place.
We invite you to join us in journeying forward together by moving through a variety of activities based on Joanna’s Spiral That Reconnects.
What to Expect
On day one (April 11), we will open the spiral to
Deepen into gratitude for what we have and for the opportunity to face our challenges together.
Honor the pain of the world in ways that face our fragility and not be consumed by it.
On day two (April 18), we will continue around the spiral to
See with new eyes. Transform our personal and collective way of perceiving the world.
Go forth. Co-create new paths forward.
(Both sessions are meant to be done in conjunction with each other. If you cannot make it to one of the sessions, you will need to schedule an abbreviated, virtual make-up session.)
Our time together serves as a journey of transformation for individuals and communities who want to be a part of creating a more life-sustaining future. It offers new tools and new horizons for the community and the working groups. When we become more at ease occupying the space between stories in all its complexity, we become better able to tap into new potentialities. So, please, come dance.
In preparation for this two-part event, we invite you to visit the website: Work That Reconnects Network, and to spend time in Nature, of which we are all part. Hang out with a tree, sit along a creek or find some other way to breathe together with an other-than-human being.
More Info
Light snacks and refreshments will be served on both days Please arrive fully nourished on April 11. On April 18, we will serve soup for lunch.
About the Facilitators
Lee Reinert
Carol Adams
Lee and Carol met while studying with Joanna Macy in 2016. Carol continues to incorporate the spiral of the Work That Reconnects in her coaching practice and facilitates workshops. She also integrates the spiral in Earth-based celebrations of solstices and equinoxes. Lee has used the Work That Reconnects to facilitate workshops for students and teachers dealing with eco-anxiety and eco-grief. She also presents the Work That Reconnects to religious organizations and the wider community to help build their resilience and creative power. Together, they present the Work That Reconnects to spiritual communities, eco-communities and the wider community to cultivate resilience during times of ecological and cultural disruption. Both Lee and Carol continue to use the principles of the Spiral in their personal lives to connect their focus to the web of life. By starting each day with gratitude for what is, they remain open to possibilities for the greater good.
