Learn how to dance with a stick... or two!

Egyptian raqs assaya (stick dancing) is a performance art that is inspired by a dance and martial art from the Saidi region of Egypt called Tahtib.

Dancing with stick/s is an important part of a belly dancer's repertoire--Saidi music often comes up in our performance sets--and it's so much fun to work with!

In this 3-hour workshop we will blend elements of the feminine raqs assaya styles typically seen in belly dance shows with elements of the masculine styles seen in the practice of Tahtib.

Expect to learn:
  • Stick grips & poses
  • Stick spinning techniques
  • Stick throwing, catching & other tricks
  • Tahtib-inspired mock strikes & blocks
  • Saidi dance steps & combos
  • Synchronizing dance movements with stick work
  • Double stick movements & tricks
  • A mini choreography incorporating all of the above

What You Will Need

  • Two wooden or bamboo sticks
(straight sticks only, no hooked canes!)

If you don't have your own, you can purchase a pair here (use discount code SHARQI2021 at checkout for 10% off),
or get a pair of wooden dowels at a home improvement store and have them cut to the height of your waist, then sand the rough edges

  • If you have only 1 stick, you will be able to do most of the workshop, with a single stick. Some of the double stick work at the end of the workshop can be modified for a single stick, but you will miss out on a handful of double stick tricks.

  • A few extra sticks will be available for people attending in person

  • Plenty of vertical and horizontal space around you, if joining us from Zoom
